[1] It was so lovely a day that he went out.
[2] It was so lovely a day that he could go out.

Which one is correct between [1] and [2]?

Each is right in its own way.
They don't mean the same thing.
[1] states the fact that he went out.
[2] indicates the possibility that he could go out.

Hi Marrion,

Your sentences are indeed correct. But, the more common way to say it would be:

[1] It was such a lovely a day that he went out.
[2] It was such a lovely a day that he could go out.

Thank you Marrion,

Well, I'm fine -- except I seemed to have exercised an indiscretion with "more superior" in another post. I've been called ignorant and had my wrist slapped. Oh well, you can't win them all. Smile

I don't answer posts much anymore because I'm really busy at work and at home. In the last few days, I've had some extra time to answer posts. I enjoy this forum very much. And since I haven't been around and it's New Years, if you don't mind, I'd like to share some things I've noticed in this forum in the past year.

1) There are more respondents.
2) Some respondents seem to have an inordinate amount of time to respond to questions.
3) Some of the new respondents are pretty good.
4) The questions are getting better as time goes on.
5) Moderator Lorikeet is more actively involved in the forums and doing a great job moderating.
6) Some old-timers are still lurking (including me).
7) The general tone of the forums are fairly moderate and friendly.
8] It's good to have Bud back in the "Learning English" forum. To me, he defines what Dave's ESL forum is all about.

Well, that's probably more than you want to know, but I ended with the number eight which means lucky!

I hope everything finds you well and wish you a happy and prosperous New Year!

Hi Lotus--and thank you for your nice words. And now for my comment Very Happy. I would probably say "It was such a lovely day that he went out." or, "The day was so lovely that he went out."
