I was asked to rewite the following sentence, using "if only"
I don�t understand why she deserts such a wonderful man like me.
a. If only I understood why she deserts such a wonderful man like me.
b. If only I understood why she deserted such a wonderful man like me.
Which is correct? a or b?

Answer "b" would be correct for me although the example doesn't make any sense.
Here's a better example.
I don't know/understand why he hates me.
If only I knew/understood why he hated me.

The original sentence was probably:
I don�t understand why she deserves such a wonderful man like me.
