how do I understand this sentence:
his newest album, the likes of which no classical pianist has made before,is an all chinese disc titled:dragon songs.
in my book , it says the likes of means: a person ,thing or group similar in character or quality to another one mentioned. but i cant understand it in this sentence.
and could you give me some more examples?

"the likes of" means 'like (that)(this)' but you can't just replace "the likes of" with 'like (that)(this)' in the same place.
You can make a new sentence like the following.
His newest album is an all chinese disc (en)titled "dragon songs", and no classical pianist had (ever) made an album like that before.
"the likes of" often follows a noun and is often followed by "which".
Examples: 1...This year's drought, the likes of which hadn't occurred in over 50 years, will result in a 65% decrease in corn production.
2...I had never seen the likes of that before. (= I had never seen anything like that before.) |
