1. I've never heard of role names, but if I had to guess, I would think it means names that we associate with a particular person or role. There are many women named Elizabeth, but it's Queen Elizabeth of England who comes to mind when I hear Elizabeth. (Sometimes it's the one whose name is associated with the Elizabethan Era, QE I, and sometimes it is the current one, QE II.) And of all the Jesuses and Mohammads who ever lived, there is only one Jesus and one Mohammad who come to mind when those names are spoken. I could be wrong, though. Someone else surely knows.
2. The phrases "if you will" and "if you like" (more British, I believe) are used to indicate that the speaker is taking a little license with the description or statement, and almost asking the listener to indulge the speaker in using that description. Your sentence might have been written as, "Role names such as Elizabeth tend to be on the conservative side, steeped in tradition, if I may put it that way." _________________ You live a new life for every new language you speak. -Czech proverb |
