In the state of Iowa, it is required for passangers in the front seats to wear a seat belt. In the back it is optional except for young children.
I think seatbelts should be required, but I also think the current design of most seatbelts don't fit well. A design the fits closer to the seat and has more then one strap across the chest would be better. That way the pressure could be distributed more evenly durring an accident.
I'd say maybe half or so people follow the seatbelt laws, but they are not enforced.

There are very few countries who do not have a law making it compulsory for those in the front seats to have their seat belts fastened. They do not do this for fun. They know that it saves lives.
In China, drivers only put on their seat belts when they think a policman is watching. Many drivers in Spain also do this, but they are very careful in towns because the police will stop them immediatlely if they see someone without a belt on.
People who do not use seat belts are very foolish. |
