While I've got the meaning of 'get the better of', which is 'to beat', from my dictionary, I'm still wondering what #2 is meaning.
What does #2 mean? And also I'd like to know what word can be changed instead of 'get the better of' in the sentence of #2.

Thanks.

It means you have to control your emotions and not let them take over and make you do something you will be sorry about later.

Dont let your emotions control you.

Example:
I was so angry, I threw my cell phone and it broke. My emotions got the better of me.

You can think of it as your emotions beating you in this sense.
