Don will do his best to enter a Spanish speech contest.
Q:to take part in a contest, can we say join or go to?
-->Don will do his best to join a Spanish speech contest.
-->Don will do his best to go to a Spanish speech contest.
Thank you |

All those example are acceptable in spoken English but I have a problem with the part, Do his best to.
It reads better t to me as:
Don will enter a Spanish speech contest.
Don will join a Spanish speech contest.
Don will go to a Spanish speech contest.
Maybe I would say:
Don will do his best in the Spanish speech contest.
Don will try his best in the Spanish speech contest. |

"do his best" means 'try his hardest', 'do everything he can'. Even though he will try very hard to enter the contest, he may or may not succeed in entering such a contest; so it is not the same as saying that he will enter such a contest.
'Enter' is used for contests, not 'join' or 'go to'. |
