In the context, what does 'serve' mean? What words can be replaced with it?

Thanks.

Hi Chan-Seung Lee,

I think the closest definition is either 7 or 8:
http://www.infoplease.com/dictionary/serve

Try:

Your detailed directions only served to confuse me further.

Your detailed directions served only to confuse me further.

Your detailed directions was only useful in confusing me further.

In that sentence "served" has the meaning of 'had the effect of', 'resulted in'.

Your detailed directions only had the effect of confusing me further.
Your detailed directions only resulted in me being more confused.

'Your detailed directions only made me more confused.' is a simple and good sentence.
