Dear friends,

1.(Use humor---Making light of life is one of the best weapons against insults. A quick wit can cope with almost anyone. Someone once said to a friend of mine, A new skirt? That looks like material youd use to upholster a chair. The woman replied, Well, come sit in my lap.)

What does "a quick wit" mean? Does "wit" refer to "a person" or "a person's wisdom"?

2.(Another family came up with a phrase that serves the same purpose. Once, after Sunday dinner, their guest commented, Oh, that was wonderful! Chicken is cheap these days, isnt it? Now, whenever one of them makes a cutting remark, someone says, Chicken is cheap, and they all crack up.)
Does "crack up" mean "laugh"?

A million thanks.

A "quick wit" is the ability to think quickly and respond with a comment that is funny and to the point. In your first example, the woman turned an insult into a clever remark.

Yes, "crack up" means "laugh", but more than just a little laugh.
