"what with the segregation" in the following paragraph, "the" is obligatory?
" The police put Rosa in jail. Bit a friend came and posted a hundred-dollar bond for her to leave. Rosa was tired of the treatment she and other African Americans received every day of their lives, what with the segregation, racial injustice, and racial discrimination of the time." |

| Yes, I think so, because the person is talking about the segregation of the time, not segregation in general. |
