#1-(1)It is necessary that he should take a rest for a while.
(2)It is necessary that he takes a rest for a while.
Could you tell me which sentence is correct?
#2-(1)I insisted that she should be present.
(2)I insisted that she was present.
Do both sentences have different meaning?
#3-Pork can be roasted 'whole' or in pieces.
Is 'whole' an adverb in this sentence?
Thank you very much for your help!!! |

Or, you could say, "It is necessary for him to take a rest for a while." or "He really needs to take a rest for a while." |

#1...I don't like either sentence. "Necessary" and "should" are incompatible. Say, 'It is necessary that he take.....' or 'He should take....'.
The second sentence should use 'take', not "takes", if you are talking about the future.. |

You are obviously not a BrE speaker, 2006-- this putative 'should' form is the common BrE equivalent of the subjunctive 'It is necessary that he take', which is the more usual approach in AmE.
