In the last sentence, "began to follow" is replaced with "began following"? And the, the meaning of them are the same?
" For many years, the Bermuda Triangle has been known as a place where boats and aricraft mysteriously disappear. This imaginary ocean triangle lies between Miami, Puerto Rico, and Bermuda. The popular legend began following the disappearance of five military aiplanes on a training mission over the area in 1945. " |

No. In this case, "following" is more like "after" so the sentence means, "The popular legend began after the disappearance of five military airplanes on a training mission over the area in 1945." "following the disappearance of five military airplanes on a training mission over the area in 1945" is a clause explaining when the legend began. |
