"Nine months ago, I had surgery and was put on pain medication."
In this sentence, what's the meaning of "was put on"?
Is "put on" used as a kind of phrasal verb? |

.
Here, 'was put on' means was given a prescription for and counseled to take' (a medicine). If the patient is not really conscious or mobile, 'put on' means 'administered' the medicine (e.g. by the nurses).
