Dear Madam/Sir,

May I ask how to do the following ? I am trying to work out a rule, if any, what should come after why.

1) Why is/does the sky so dark ?
2) Why is/does he in black ?
3) Why is/does that car looks/look so familiar ?

Would you say, "The sky is so dark." or "The sky does so dark."? "Dark" is an adjective and requires "is" so "Why is the sky so dark?" is correct.

You would say, "He is in black." to describe what someone is wearing. Therefore, you would say, "Why is he in black?"

You would say, "That car looks so familiar." To make the question you would say, "Why does that car look so familiar?"

Dear Lorikeet,

Thank you very much. The way you answer makes things very clear.
