The elderly find that they are forced to retire and they have trouble
getting other jobs. As one member of the Gray Panthers put "it",
the young seem to feel that old people descended from outer space.
What does the pronoun "it" indicate?

Hello b7lake -
In your example..."put it" = a manner in which to say something.
I think "it" refers to the way in which the member expressed their
opinion/view (what they had to "say")
on the subject of what the young feel about the elderly.
