Ron has a cat named Chicken.
What does the above sentence mean?
(A) Ron has a cat which is named Chicken.
(B) Ron has a cat which was named Chicken.

Well, even if you named the cat Chicken a year ago, you would still say, "The cat is named Chicken." It is true that the cat was named Chicken a year ago, and has been named Chicken all that time. Nevertheless, we say that the cat "is named Chicken" when asked what he is called.
You could say, "We named the cat Chicken because he is such a fraidycat." Or, "After a week of debate and voting in the family, we have named the cat Chicken." _________________ You live a new life for every new language you speak. -Czech proverb |
