Hi there!
I need to know which one is correct. Like if I gotta say, I swear n gotta make it sound serious n refer to the relationship involved...what would I say...I swear by you or I swear on you n I swear by our friendship or I swear on our friendship?
Plz help me out!

Hi whatdaheck,
I like "I swear by our friendship." It sounds serious, yet congenial.

You can also say, "I swear on my life" or "I swear on my son's life" to prove you are really serious. I recently heard someone swear on his daughter's life that he would pay what he owed the other person, but he would not sign something putting a lien on his house for security. So his roof was more important than his daughter. Hm. _________________ You live a new life for every new language you speak. -Czech proverb |

Hey Lorikeet!
Does that mean "swear on" can also work...
I mean "swear to" is correct but is "swear on" also correct? Does it make sense?
Thanks

"I swear to you" is correct. It means you are the one I am making the promise/pledge, etc. to. I swear to you that I am telling the truth.
If you "swear on" something, it means you are using that item/person to show how strongly you are telling the truth. You can swear on a Bible, or on the heads of your children, or on your friendship to show how strongly you feel. "I swear on our friendship that I never said that about you." |
