"night" is later than "evening". Evening is from about 6 or 7 pm to about 10 or 11 pm; night is after that and until morning.
It is more common to say 'last evening' and 'last night' instead of "yesterday". |

Interesting question. I asked around, and it seems most common to say:
Last night but not yesterday night.
Yesterday evening but not last evening.
Yesterday afternoon but not last afternoon.
Yesterday morning but not last morning.
In Shakespeare's time, by the way, "tonight" meant either last night or the coming night, whichever was closer. The context would also help: "I saw her tonight" must mean "I saw her last night," while "I will see her tonight" must mean "I will see her tonight."

| I always use "yesterday morning/afternoon/evening" and "last night" but in recent years I've heard "last evening" while listening to the radio. It may be more acceptable in different areas. |
