the elegant danz, the sinuous cha cha cha, the joyful guaracha, the explosive mambo and, most importantly,* the earthy son*, the island's quintessential song format.

Why is the earthy son suddenly brought up here?

Bye

earthy

adjective (earthier, earthiest) 1 resembling or suggestive of soil. 2 direct and uninhibited, especially about sexual subjects or bodily functions.

Like Philo said Laughing, a girl always needs a direct and uninhibited son, boy to dance with.

I think "son" means a particular kind of song in that country (must be somewhere in Latin America), and it is an earthy type of song.

Here, I just Googled a snippet of the phrase and found the article that it comes from:

http://www.salsamagazine.com/generic47.html

Miss Dare Devil, your quote has some misspellings and missing words, so maybe your source was flawed. Anyway, read the article: It is about Salsa music.

As to son, here is a quotation from the article, referring to Joe Arroyo:

"Better yet, he had an instinctive understanding of the many dances to be found in the Caribbean. When the above-mentioned genres weren't enough to satisfy his voracious appetite, he invented his own-'joe-son'-a sparkling blend of son, calypso and merengue best exemplified by his mega-hit 'La Noche.'"
