Hi, everyone!
I'd like to know if there is a strict rule for the use of "the other" and "another". In the passage below, do you think "the other" and "another" are interchangeable?
Millions of visitors come to see Washington, a city of parks and squares, of imposing monuments and of many museums. In fact, the Smithsonian
Institution, located on the open space called the Mall, is the largest collection of museums in the world. It is free to all.
At one end of the Mall, visitors see the famous white-domed Capitol building. At the other /another end are the towering Washington Monument and the Loncoln Memorial, named for the respected U.S. president.
Thank you!

The Mall is a rectangle shape. At one end of the rectangle, is the Capitol; at the other end is the Washington Monument and the Lincoln Memorial. There is only one other "end" so "the other" is correct. "Another" would mean there are more than two. For example: there are different things for sale in this store. In one corner you can buy shirts; in another corner you can buy pants; in another corner you can get socks, etc.
"The other" and "Another" are similar to "the" and "a" in that respect. If this isn't clear, tell me and I'll give you some other examples. |

Hi, lorikeet!
Thank you for your reply.
Now I understand the defference between the two.
Thanks again!
