...... Wallace remembered reading an essay about human population. The author had discussed how disease, war, hunger, and other problems sometimes reduce the number of people in a country or region. The answer was clear, Wallace said, "that on the whole the best fitted live." .......
From this passage;
The answer was clear, Wallace said, "that" on the whole the best fitted live.
In this sentence, what is "that"?, which does "that" indicate?
Is "that" a "pronoun"?
Or is "that" an "adverb"?
I want to know all my questions.... |

Probably the that has been misplaced and it actually follows said (Wallace said that, "....).
OR
The that refers to the context that has gone by, but such a construction sounds dubious. |
