In the following sentence, is pains correct or wrong?

| In American English, its pain. I guess you could say it either way but I never hear "take the pains..." |

To be grammatically correct, the sentence should read, "Here are some simple steps to take the pain out of speech making."
The plural "pains" is used in some expressions; here are examples:
He is always complaining about little aches and pains.
