In the following sentence, is pains correct or wrong?

In American English, its pain. I guess you could say it either way but I never hear "take the pains..."

To be grammatically correct, the sentence should read, "Here are some simple steps to take the pain out of speech making."

The plural "pains" is used in some expressions; here are examples:

He is always complaining about little aches and pains.

She went to great pains to make the party a success.
