As far as I know, 'route' is to send something through a way. But in the above example 'route' may have another meaning. I looked it up in the dictionary but I couldn't find other than 'to send something'.
What does the quote mean?

You made a good guess, but the verb is "rout" and not "route". It means they were defeated by a big margin. |
