Children often do as ______ as what adults, particularly parents and teachers, ______ of them. That is, tell a child he is stupid, and he may play the role of a foolish child.

A. much B. well

I cannot tell the difference between A and B. Will you help me?

You don't have a choice for the second blank, but I think this works:

Children often do as well as what adults, particularly parents and teachers, expect of them. That is, tell a child he is stupid, and he may play the role of a foolish child.

If the second sentence were not there, I might also say:

Children often do as much as what adults, particularly parents and teachers, demand of them.

Yes, the original sentence is as follows.
Children often do as well as what adults,particularly parents and teachers, expect of them. That is, tell a child he is "stupid", and he may play the role of a foolish child.

But i still cannot understand your explanation. That is, i still don't know the difference between Well and Much.
Is there something to do with "EXPECT"?
