What does the word "like" mean in this sentence?

It is intended to mean that learning to read is an example of one of the things he learned to do first.
However, although, nowadays, "like" is used in this way all the time, it should be written as "such as" to be grammatically correct.
You use like in similes.

e.g. His car looked like a pile of junk.
