| A million Christmas shoppers pay money for "pet rocks." A furious mob runs through a business district, smashing store windows. What do these scenes have in common? They are all cases of collective behavior - passing events during which goups of people improvise new ways of behaving. |
What does mean 'passing events'?
With what words can 'passing events' be replaced?
Thanks. |

In this case, it means a temporary sociological phenomenon.
In general, a passing event is one that occurs, and then ends.
I wouldn't be concerned with replacement terms, this one is the most appropriate.
alternative: a temporary occurance |
