When you want to say "These days, public places provide smoking areas."
or "These days, public places have separate facilities for smokers and nonsmokers.", is the following sentence also acceptable?

"These days, they separate smoking areas from nonsmoking areas in public places."

I don't like the last sentence very much. It suggests that these two areas cannot even be adjacent to each other.

I would say, These days (many) public places have separate smoking and nonsmoking areas.
