2.I'd rather we catched the last train.

I have thought that #2 is right. But I saw #1 in a book.
Could you tell me which one is correct?

Thanks.

Dear Chan-Seung, #2 is not correct for a few reasons. First, the past tense of 'catch' is 'caught'. But, you don't need the past tense in your sentences. Present tense (catch) is correct (#1). Additionally, in the two sentences, 'rather' is used as a verb. But 'rather' is normally an adverb. 'Would rather' (used in your sentences) is an idiom. If you don't want to use idioms, you can use the word 'prefer' as a good substitute. example: I prefer that we catch the last train. Ok?--Eric Smile
