Is it correct? As far as I know, 'on a date' is unnecessary. I think that 'I asked her out.' is correct rather than 'I asked her out on a date.'
Could you let me whether my opinion is right with your explanation?

| Both ways are common. Adding "on a date" is redundant, but you'll find a lot of redundancy in the English language. Sometimes, redundancy is used for emphasis. |
