Its easy to speak too quickly and to use slang which has the effect of excluding Easterners. Typical conversation topics like sports and television are outside the knowledge base of most Easterners.

Hello teachers,
Could you explain what the latter sentence means?
Is it " they don't care about sports and television"?
Thanks in advance |

It means that sports and TV are not things that Easterners know much about, whether because they don't care, they don't have access, or they are incapable of getting or understanding the information.
So the author seems to be saying that you can lose Easterners by speaking fast, speaking in slang, or talking about sports or TV. Which Easterners are these?
By the way, the quote should begin, "It's easy," not "Its easy." _________________ You live a new life for every new language you speak. -Czech proverb |

Thank you CP for your explanation.
the sentences are from a passage which discusses cultural differences between Western people and Asian people. |
