When naming a book club that generally reads only a certain author, why some use 'the' before the author's name but some don't? For example they have 'The Jane Austen Book Club' with 'the', and 'Stephen King Book Club' without 'the'. Thanks. |

Dear Outsider, Using 'The' before the book club seems natural to me, more natural than not using it. As you know, 'the' is the definite article. It refers to definite, specific things. And I would believe that, generally, there is only one 'club' of people that is devoted to an author. We assume that those people like and admire the author, and would not compete among themselves and form a second 'club'. (Haters of the author would have the word 'hate' in the name of the 'club'.) Since there would be only one club, 'the' could be placed in front of the name of the author to name the club. Anyway, that's my American English logic for using it. But, it's not really important whether is has a 'the' or not. Ok? -- Eric |

Although "Stephen King Book Club" may be the official name, when discussing it, a "the" is put in the front. Google.com has some information about the Stephen King Book Club. If you google it, you will see the "the" appears. It does not sound correct to say, "Google.com has some information about Stephen King Book Club." It sounds like the "the" is missing. |

OK, so without the definite article it doesn't sound natural.
Thank you again Eric and Lorikeeet. |
