Hello, teachers!!
But, to be effective for any purpose in the writer's own day, the written word must reach the minds and touch the feelings of the writer's comtemporaries.
----->
What does "any" mean in the 1st line?
Thank you in advance. |

any means, one or some of a thing or a number of things. It does not matter how much or how many.
In fact, you can omit the phrase, for any purpose without changing the meaning of the sentence.
You don't really need "in the writer's own day" either. |
