Does "came calling" mean "visited" only?
After the war, Armenia enjoyed a brief bit of independence--until Russia's Red Army came calling in 1920. _________________ Hiromichi |

No, "came calling" doesn't only mean 'visited', and it doesn't mean 'visited' in the Armenia sentence.
"came calling" just means 'came' to that place, for whatever reason. It could have been for a visit, to try to sell you something, to collect money, to get some information, etc.
In the sentence, the Russian Army came to Armenia to occupy Armenia and end Armenia's "brief bit of independence". |
