Hello, teachers!!
Fame often makes a writer vain, but seldom makes him proud.
----->
What does the last part of the above sentence "seldom makes him proud" mean?
Thank you in advance. |

It just means that writers are usually not proud of becoming famous, although fame usually makes them vain.
I don't know that I agree with that, though. These days, at least, most writers want fame and fortune above all else. They would be proud to become famous and ashamed if they fail.
Who said this, anyway? _________________ You live a new life for every new language you speak. -Czech proverb |

Dear CP:
Thank you so much for your explanations.
I have another question.
Fame often makes a writer vain, but seldom makes him proud.
----->
What does "him" mean? Does "him" mean "his work" in this sentence?
Thank you in advance. |

"him" means the writer, and in answer to CP, Google says it was W. H. Auden. And I don't agree with the quote either. |

Dear Lorikeet & CP:
Thank you for your time.
I understood you.
I didn't answer CP's question--This is the quote by W. H. Auden, thought Lorikeet already told us.
Thank you again for your help.
Have a nice day!! |
