Please explain the meaning of the first sentence below.
Friends, shelve your Shakespeare, save your Samuel Johnson, withhold your Winston Churchill. Britons say that, when it comes to pure wit, none measures up to 19th-century poet and playwright Oscar Wilde. _________________ Hiromichi |

The author is just saying, don't bother checking Shakespeare, Johnson, or Churchill for witty sayings. Go straight to Wilde for the good stuff.
"Shelve" here means to return the books to the bookshelf. _________________ You live a new life for every new language you speak. -Czech proverb |
