I go and see my family "every so often".
-Is this commonly used?
Why using "every" together with "so often"?

Yes, it is common usage.
It comes from the grammar form: every time period (e.g. every day, every week, every month, etc.). So often implies a not frequent time period. So, every so often means you go visit, but not frequently, and not exactly the same time span between visits. |

I think Bob said "not frequently". "Every so often" is like "once in a while." |
