Hello teachers,

(1) John ate the meat raw, and Tom ate the fish in the same way.

In (1), 'in the same way' is the pro-form of 'raw', i.e. Tom ate the fish raw.

However, in (2) 'in the same way' cannot be the pro-fomr of 'broken'.

(2) John bought the table broken, and Tom bought the chair in the same way.

How about the following?

(3) John received the manuscript unfinished, and Tom received another manuscript in the same way.

(4) The policeman punched John drunk, and Tom punched the pokiceman in the same way. (drunk is the subject 'the policeman')

(5) John bought the carrots fresh, and Tom bought the fish in the same way.

Can 'in the same way' in (3)-(5) be the proform of each italic word? Please tell me your judgement on the basis of intuition.

ShoHiro

"in the same way" is not good, but "the same way" is acceptable for all the sentences.
