The passage below is part of what I transcribed, listening to a radio program. The blank below is where I got stuck. The commentator is talking about the word "Mandarin."
Which, #1 or #2 below, do you think comes to the blank?

2. the
In English, the word for the kind of Chinese that's spoken in Beijing and that area is called "Mandarin," which is sort of interesting. It has nothing to do with ( ) Chinese word or words to describe that kind of Chinese, but actually comes through various language including Spanish and Portuguese and actually means "counselor.� I think it is #1(a), but I wonder if it could be #2(the). |
