We realized that John was still young and impressionable, but were nevertheless surprised at his obstinacy.


Does this sentence using "obstinacy" make any sense?

Yes, it makes sense. We knew he was young and impressionable, but we didn't think he would be so stubborn / intractible / incorrigible.
