Do you definitely need the preposition "for" in the above sentence?

Yes, you need "for". "studying for the test" means that you were reviewing all the things you were taught in order to pass the test.
If you omit "for", it means that you were studying the actual test. You had a copy of the test questions in advance and you were reading the test questions and preparing answers. This is not what the sentence wants to mean. |
