For the below context , I'm confused that what's funny for the underline?
-----------------------------------------------------
Chandler: Kids, new dream... I'm in Las Vegas. (Rachel sits down to hear Chandler's dream.)
Customer: (To Rachel) Ahh, miss? More coffee?
Rachel: Ugh. (To another customer that's leaving.) Excuse me, could you give this to that guy over there? (Hands him the coffee pot.) Go ahead. (He does so.) Thank you. (To the gang.) Sorry. Okay, Las Vegas.
Chandler: Okay, so, I'm in Las Vegas... I'm Liza Minelli- (everyone laugh) |

Liza Mimelli is a singer who was very popular many years ago. She was (and is) popular with people who are much older than the "Friends" characters. Like many aging stars, she still does a lot of shows in Las Vegas.
It's funny because you would not expect him to dream that he was a woman, much less a female pop singer from decades ago. Also, Minelli is known for being very popular with gay men, regardless of their age, and Chandler is heterosexual. Does the dream reveal some unconscious desire of his to appeal to gay men? ...Or at least plant that thought in the others' minds? The rest of the script would show whether or not there was a gay aspect to the joke. |
