Hello, teachers!!

Students were allowed to do almost anything that interested them, beit reading, playing board games, talking with friends, or roaming outside.

What does "be it" mean?

Be it = Whether it be.

It (they) are very similar to "for example." It may be that we use "be it" to delineate a range of things, but I'm not sure about that.
