Is "where" possible in stead of "when"??

He was reading a novel in his study, (when) he heard something fall with a crash in the next room.

If not, would you please tell me why not.

Yes, you could use either. With "when," the focus is on "was reading." With "where," the focus is "in his study." Either way, the meaning is the same.
