As dieters around the world are consuming fewer carbohydrates, industry is consuming more.

What does the word "carbohydrates" in the sentence above?
(1) energy component of diet
(2) food containing carbohydrates

I think #1, but it may be broader than that, since it mentions that 'industry is consuming more'-- so it cannot refer merely to ingested nutrients.
