"The word mandala comes from the Indian word for circle, which is what a mandala is ― a circle. It is really much more than that, however. An examination of art from various countries and time periods reveals that the circle (egg or sphere) is often elaborated on in order to make a flower or a wheel, sometimes even a wheel in rotation. The circle may have a castle, city, or courtyard motif divided into four parts, or the mandala may look like an eye, complete with pupil and iris. The center of a mandala is often a star, sun, or cross, generally with four, eight, or twelve rays. Sometimes the circle is represented by a snake or fish coiled in the center to make a spiral shape. Mandala circles are often combined with a square design. These representations are usually symmetrical, with either the circle or the square inside the another, and often relate the number four." |
