Please explain the meaning of "if for no other reason ~ his decision alone" in the following sentence. It's very difficult for me to understand. Thank you.

Captain Koppe sensed that this was one of those times when he had to be alone�if for no other reason than to remind himself that he would have to make his decision alone.

He had to be alone, even if being alone was just to remind him that he was the only person to make the big decision.
