Quote:
The poor murdered man must be revenged.

As far as I'm concerned, the meaning of the quote is 'The poor murdered man must revenge himself on someone who killed him.'.

But how will the dead man revenge his death? Can you tell me if my paraphrase is right? If it is wrong, what does the quote mean?

Thanks.

It might be better to say that

The poor murdered man must be avenged.

I believe they are saying someone must take revenge upon the killer

Thans for your kind reply.

I'm writing to find out if my understanding of your answer is right.

'avenge' is for me to punish someone who has done something to harm someone who I have something to do with while 'revenge' is for me to punish someone who has done something to harm me.

Can you tell me if my definition of 'avenge' and 'revenge' is correct?

Thanks.
