would a native speaker accept:
Behind the message was a man.
or must it be:
Behind the message there was a man.
Is the word order ok? Is the `there� in sent. 2 necessary? |

It is fine to say it either with or without "there" as you have it.
Similarly:
Behind the building was / there was a pool.
