=It snows a lot in this area.

No, your interpretation of the statement is not necessarily correct. Depending on the context, it could be exactly as you understood it. But it could also be that the area does not snow a lot and it happens it got more than the usual last night. You drive through there today thinking to yourself, �There is a lot of snow in this area.�
