I saw the example in a book. In my opinion, it might not be correct and it should be corrected to 'In time it emerged and was transformed into a beautiful creature.'

Can you correct me if I was wrong?

Transform is a transitive verb. The creature transformed itself. It's OK, grammatically. I think was transformed sounds better, though.
